Races

Horse racing is one of the most popular equestrian sports in the world.  They are usually held at race tracks but often run in other places.

The horse races of Sanlúcar de Barrameda are considered the oldest in Spain.  They have their roots in informal competitions that were organized by the owners of the horses that transported fish and shell fish on Bajo de Guía beach in the early decades of the nineteenth century.

The first regulated races took place on 31st August 1845, with rules for aptitude, weight and speed. Today the races are run from Bajo de Guía to Las Piletas with more than two kilometers of fine sand, the beach is turned into an excellent and natural race track at low tide in the evening.

The horse races at Sanlúcar de Barrameda have been declared as being of SPAIN INTERNATIONAL TOURIST INTEREST

This consists of completing a series of exercises with carriages. It could be drawn by one horse (“limonera”), two horses (“troncos”), four horses (“cuartas”), five horses (“media potencia o enganche a la Jerezana”) and six horses (“potencia”).

Harnessing competitions also have dressage tests, marathons, (like cross country, natural obstacles distributed across the countryside) and manageability (obstacles in a competition arena).
